At 1,803 feetHigh Point is the highest point in New Jersey, ranking #40 among U.S. state high points and marking my 2nd overall.

Located within High Point State Park, near the New York–New Jersey border just southeast of Port Jervis and I-84, this summit is one of the most accessible high points in the country. After hiking Mount Greylock in Massachusetts, “summiting” High Point felt like a bit of a cheat—you park and walk roughly 700 feet to the monument.

The High Point Monument was built through the generosity of Colonel Anthony and Susie Dryden Kuser in honor of all war veterans. Construction began in 1928 and was completed in 1930. Rising 220 feet above the summit, the monument offers views of the Pocono Mountains to the west, the Catskills to the north, and the Wallkill River Valley to the southeast.

Unfortunately, the monument tower was closed during my visit. Still, on a clear day, the views stretch into New York and Pennsylvania, making the stop worthwhile even without climbing the structure.

More to explore

High Point State Park offers over 50 miles of trails, including 18 miles of the Appalachian Trail. I was short on time and wasn’t able to explore the trail network, but it’s easy to see how this park could support a full day—or weekend—of hiking.

The park is also home to Lake Marcia, a spring-fed, 20-acre natural lake known for its cool, refreshing water and popular swimming area.
